Children’s palliative care is the relieving treatment for children. The WHO’s definition of palliative care for children includes: “Palliative care for children is the active total care of the child’s body, mind and spirit, and also involves giving support to the family; effective palliative care requires a broad multidisciplinary approach that includes the family and makes use of available community resources; it can be successfully implemented even if resources are limited.”

Since November 2013, Doctor Zhou Xuan of the Hematologic Malignancy Centre of Beijing Children’s Hospital affiliated to the Capital Medical University started to prepare to build the palliative care team for the centre, with team members consisting of children’s haematological tumour specialist physicians and nurses, psychologists, as well as volunteers from the hospital and community. It is hoped that through the palliative care, the children who receive the haematological tumour treatment can improve their life quality, and those who cannot be cured can go to the end of their lives quietly with dignity.
